at Broadcast Rentals
Sony PDW-700 from Broadcast Rentals
Sony PDW-700 XDCAM Camcorder
The Sony PDW-700 Professional XDCAM Camcorder is the newest member of the XDCAM family. It is equipped with three 2/3-inch type CCDs – a newly developed “Power HAD FX” progressive CCD with 1920 x 1080 effective pixels.

Stunning-quality HD images can be captured by this high-resolution CCD in conjunction with the 14-bit A/D converter and advanced digital signal.
The PDW-700 offers very high quality HD recording at a data rate of up to 50Mbps using the MPEG-2 4:2:2P@HL compression. It also provides multi-format recording flexibility including 1080i, 720P and SD, which comes with HD/SD conversion and cross conversion between 1080i and 720P.

The PDW-700 has been designed to increase the appeal of XDCAM HD for applications such as news, European TV drama, documentary and mainstream entertainment programs that required a high quality look.

File-based acquisition onto Professional Disc, with thumbnail and proxy operation, will also make the PDW-700 ideal for fast-turnaround news and live applications where speed of production is a critical requirement.

Sony PDW-HD1500 Professional Disc Recorder/Editor provides outstanding picture quality of MPEG HD422 as well as an eight-channel (HD-SDI), 24-bit audio recording capability.

What is unique about this deck is its ability to operate on AC or DC power. With its large 4.3-inch LCD and built-in speaker, it performs as a versatile and high-quality recorder which is suitable for both in-house and field operations.

It comes equipped with a multi-format up/down converter, which is highly useful when employing both HD- and SD-format materials at the same time.
The PDW-HD1500 will record and replay XDCAM HD 50Mb/s 4:2:2 data onto 50GB Dual-layer Professional Disc. With interfaces including i.LINK and Ethernet, the PDW-HD1500 can operate at the heart of small or large scale file-based networked systems. VTR-like JOG/shuttle operation and video interfaces including HD-SDI and SD-SDI also makes the PDW-HD1500 ideal for operation in more traditional video-based installations.

The Tapeless World

As of this writing, there are some 400 HD formats in use around the world. And you thought you had a lot of choices! Formats have proliferated so fast, that there is now a complete disconnect between how we shoot and how we deliver.

The tapeless revolution has given the camera manufacturers an opportunity to save money by eliminating the tape drive mechanism and the shooters a new opportunity to shoot with any of several formats in a smaller, lighter camera.

Moving to a larger question that looms in the tapeless world “where do I archive my original material, finished program and project files?”

Most of us would say hard drives. They’re cheap, easy to store and plug and play. But hard drives are NOT long term storage devices. If you don’t spin-up a hard drive at lease once every three months, it may not spin-up at all – ever again. That is due to physical problems with the lubricants inside the drive. But the real bad news is that if you don’t remove and replace the data on the drive at least once every 6 months, it may just “fade-out.” That’s right, it can just become so weak the computer can no longer recognize it as data. It needs to be moved off the drive, and then replaced on the drive.

This is a new service we offer at Broadcast Rentals, along with our capture/transfer services.

For more information and tables on connection speeds, video formats, frames rates and comparison of frame sizes, plus a list of which broadcasters use which formats, read the entire article on our website.

Faces Behind the Service
At Broadcast Rentals, superior service is only as good as the people who deliver it. To this end we are proud to feature team members from our Phoenix and San Diego offices.
Michael L. Jones, San Diego office

Michael was Born in Los Angeles, CA. His career started with his education from the University of Southern California School of Cinema. Upon his graduation, Michael began his career during his service in the Navy working as a Public Affairs officer, making television commercials and programs for the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Secretary of the Navy in Washington D.C., and the American Forces Radio & Television Network worldwide.
After his service, Michael moved to Phoenix and began his civilian career making highly classified film presentations for Goodyear Aerospace. He then moved to broadcast TV, working for the NBC affiliate in Phoenix - first making commercials and documentary programs, then spending time in the news department as Chief Photographer, On-camera Reporter, and Assignment Editor.

In 1980, Michael joined with two other partners in opening a video/film production company called Video In Phoenix (ViP). For a decade, Michael acted as a Director/Writer/Producer, building a successful business in the Phoenix market. It was during this time that Michael added Director of Photography and Online Editor to his expertise, working in 16 & 35 mm film, and video, while editing on linear and non-linear systems with a variety of switcher, audio, and DVE configurations. After selling his company in 1990, Michael returned to television production as an independent Director/Producer/Writer.

Michael comments on his role with Broadcast Rentals:
..."As Director of Marketing for the San Diego office at Broadcast Rentals, I am responsible to identify new business and to identify new opportunities to serve new and existing clients. I knew Deborah and Oz when they ran the business out of their home. I have fond memories of their daughter pushing around equipment cases to build forts. Broadcast Rentals is a great company and we have a lot in common."

"We want the customer to come first and help them with what they want to achieve and help them with the means to get there. Part of what we do is to teach customers about the equipment and to make sure that they have all of the right gear to make it happen. And, our approach to marketing is geared toward making the customer comfortable in our environment. That is why I have been working with Michael Stewart here at our San Diego office to make changes to our offices. Our new services for transferring and archiving video is an exciting addition to our service offerings and should be available in early 2009. We welcome our Southern California clients to pay us a visit."

Michael's favorite film: "Butch Cassidy and the SunDance Kid"…it is the greatest comedy and I am enthralled by the subtle interplay with the actors…and the humor.

Favorite hobbies: "I play guitar and love to read a lot. We have four grand daughters and enjoy them a great deal. They are a huge part of our lives. And, I enjoy spending time with my wife. We have been married just under 10 years. We attend many of the events that are available to us in the area."

Capture - Transfer Services...New for 2009.
Broadcast Rentals Capture-Transfer Services

Broadcast Rentals San Diego
is expanding its services to include Video Capturing, Transferring and Archiving.
"Part of our mission is to serve customers and to help them with their workflow". According to Michael L. Jones, Marketing Director for the San Diego office, ..." Broadcast Rentals will be offering a system to burn data files to blue ray discs for archiving and retrieval. Blue ray offers greater capacity ...up to 50 Gig of material and is a great application for video data files. We also plan to offer archiving to SONY XDCAM Blu-ray disks for clients standardized in that format. Ideally, customers will bring us their hard drive or tapeless media and we’ll transfer their video as data files to Blu-ray so they can walk away with archived media to store on their shelf. They can bring that disc back to us and we’ll convert the files back to a hard drive if changes need to be made or the files need to be used again. The service is ideal for clients with short programs…in place of renting a playback machine. We should be fully operational with this service in early 2009."
